Bio
Taiwo J. Adeagbo is a PhD candidate in Political Science and Public Policy Lab Fellow at Temple University. His research examines democracy assistance, political parties, and institutional development in sub-Saharan Africa. His paper investigates why party-focused democracy assistance produces divergent organizational outcomes, arguing that effectiveness depends on political elites’ incentives to invest in durable party institutions. Using cross-national analysis and case studies of Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya, the study identifies conditions shaping successful external assistance.
The Conditional Effects of Party-Focused Democracy Assistance: Elite Incentives Alignment and Party Organizational Development
Abstract
Why does party-focused democracy assistance strengthen political parties in some contexts but produce superficial reform in others? This paper argues that effectiveness depends on whether donor-supported reforms align with political elites’ incentives for long-term organizational investment. Using cross-national analysis of African multiparty systems and case studies of Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya, the study examines how elite incentives and donor program design interact to produce organizational absorption, symbolic compliance, or institutional circumvention across different political contexts.
