Red Fingerprints: Ideology, Logistics, and Lived Experiences of Soviet-Trained Ethiopian Military Cadres (1977–1991)
Abstract
This paper examines institutional, operational, and human impacts of Soviet military assistance to Ethiopia during the Derg era (1977-1991). Moving beyond macro-level geopolitical histories of Cold War realignment in the Horn of Africa, the study utilizes archival sources and veteran testimonies to explore the lived experiences of Ethiopian military cadres and specialists trained by Soviet advisers. It evaluates how Soviet military doctrine, political ideology , and technical instruction were absorbed, adapted, or resisted by Ethiopian personnel.
