Reframing Malaria Intervention in Nigeria: Privileging Local Perspectives
Abstract
This article examines how malaria is defined and governed in Nigeria. Drawing on analysis of 34 documents, I trace how insecticide-treated nets, medicines, and diagnosis receive stronger evidentiary, financial, and administrative support than systemic, behavioral, and environmental approaches. Standardized evidence and transnational financing sustain this hierarchy. Biomedical tools remain essential, but sustainable malaria reduction requires locally produced knowledge to inform problem definition and intervention choice, rather than confining communities to implementing predetermined programs.
