A Pedagogy of Staying: Everyday Gendered Resistance after Iran’s Woman, Life, Freedom Movement
Abstract
This article examines how gendered resistance after Iran’s Woman, Life, Freedom movement reshapes what people understand as possible in everyday life. Drawing on a situated feminist autoethnography in Tehran (2022–2024), it shows how witnessing resistance to compulsory hijab can make alternative actions imaginable while also prompting support, intervention, or refusal to enforce the norm. The article develops the Pedagogy of Staying to explain how such possibilities can persist even when public behavior is constrained.
