The Evolution of Revolution: The Political and Religious Challenges Facing Women’s Soccer in Iran and Saudi Arabia 2000–2024
Abstract
This article compares the development of women’s soccer in Iran and Saudi Arabia, two conservative Muslim states with distinct political systems, religious interpretations, and approaches to women’s participation. It examines religious, cultural, and political constraints on women in sport, especially soccer, and reviews efforts by governments and civil society to expand opportunities. The article also considers the influence of international organizations, including FIFA and Human Rights Watch, in promoting reform and greater access for women.
