Camp David 1978 and Camp David 2000: Comparative Analysis
Abstract
Camp David, the secure presidential retreat in Maryland, hosted landmark Middle East peace summits. This paper compares the successful 1978 Israeli-Egyptian summit led by President Jimmy Carter with the failed 2000 Israeli-Palestinian summit convened by President Bill Clinton. Drawing on extensive primary and secondary sources, including participants’ memoirs and ninety interviews with senior officials from six delegations, it analyzes how leadership, negotiation dynamics, and political context shaped divergent outcomes and broader prospects for diplomatic breakthroughs.
